The decades of 1970s and 80s introduced many new trends and style statements into being. The experiments carried out in designs impressed millions in those days. These years also saw an instant change in the fashion world. The advent of MTV to the public domain had brought about a radical change in various spheres like music industry and fashion. People tried to express themselves often. The era saw abrupt changes in the styles of women and men.
In the decade of 70 s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80 s where women used to wear bold dresses having shoulder pads and men wore shirts in full sleeves which were stitched in expensive material together with loose fitting baggy trousers that were slightly tapered at the ankle. Now, this designer clothing gave a romantic outlook and gave birth to a romantic movement, which in turn was inspired by punks from the former era. New crazes like designer jeans and leather in clothing were a rage among the public.
Business women started to wearing pointed and high heeled shoes. Jelly shoes characterised by their clear and glossy colour became popular at parties. Jogging pants and tracksuits became common leisure wear. Acid washed faded jeans and denim jackets along with piercing and tattooing were made common by the music bands. Men started to wear earrings. Hairdo s changed with shiny voluminous looks in fashion. Colored and streaked hair came into trend. Men kept longer hair and women kept short hair.
Jewellery encrusted with precious stones became a display of money and power. Women wore long unusual earrings which occasionally did not match each other. They sometimes even used single earrings. The trend in jewellery was to wear chains of gold & silver in punk style and neon colours. Enamel and modern shapes also gave a bit of edge over the old jewellery. Men started to wear digital watches with metal bands but afterwards reverted back to dialed watches. Kids popularized multi-colored plastic-type watches. Roman numeral adorned the dials of watches. Significantly the Movado design was a hallmark of status with glossy design and a dot at 12. Sometimes people also used several watches on a single wrist along with hoop earrings and gold bracelets.
Designer bags made of leather were also one of the trend setters. Clutch bags captivated attention amongst people for being so firm and appressed. Stylish briefcases also sold very well. Women had a custom to match their shoes with their bags. Shawls in various range & colours were worn on different occasions like in day time with tank tops and at evening with gowns. Designer under garments made waves in this period. Women used light colored, laced under garments. Men preferred vibrant colored boxer shorts. Small metal framed glasses became common towards 1984-85. A smaller rounder type continued to be popular through the entire decade. Fashion had heavy impact on everyday living of those decades.
