Tektronix has pushed up the acquisition bandwidth of its real-time spectrum analysers, at the same time as cutting noise in its ‘mixed domain’ oscilloscopes and improving its analysis software.

All three up-dates have been made to better suit its products to testing next-generation Wi-Fi.

“With the emergence of the Internet-of-things, more and more products are incorporating wireless LAN and they all need to pass compliance tests,” said Jim McGillivary, general manager of analyser products at Tektronix. “There is a huge market need for better WLAN test solutions across all phases of the product lifecycle.”

The first version of the firm’s RSA5000 real-time spectrum analysers had an acquisition bandwidth of 110MHz, which was insufficient to test 802.11ac Wi-Fi at its full 160MHz bandwidth. This omission has been delt with in a new B variant which has 165MHz bandwidth.

Another upgrade included in the RSA5000B is that the minimum signal duration for 100% ‘probability of intercept’ (POI) has improved 33% to 2.8µs. “This ensures that even the briefest signals are discovered, triggered on and saved, minimising time to intercept in spectrum management applications,” claimed the firm.

Real-time features previously available only at extra cost are now standard in 5000B instruments, including swept DPX, density trigger, time-qualified triggers and improved minimum signal duration. “Spectrum processing rate has increased by 33%, to more than 390,000 spectrums/s,” said Tektronix.

The firm’s MDO4000 series of ‘mixed domain’ oscilloscopes have also been raised to revision B, as phase noise has been improved by 10-20dB and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) broadened by 5dBc to 65dBc typical 55dBc guaranteed to 60dBc guaranteed). .

Other improvements here include lowering the lowest frequency range to 9kHz and doubling RF acquisition time to 158ms. “9kHz is really important for EMI, especially automotive,” said the firm.

SignalVu-PC off-line analysis software now “displays continuously when connected to MDO4000B and there are options to support Wi-Fi 802.11a, b, g, j, n, p and ac tests,” said Tektronix.
