Business TSMC brings forward 16nm finfet and 20nm planar processes

TSMC has started risk production of 16nm finfet ICs with volume production within one year, reports DigiTimes 

TSMC’s new co-CEO Mark Liu made the announcement yesterday at TSMC’s supply chain management forum in Taiwan.

Liu said the 16nm finfet process is ahead of schedule. The schedule for volume production had ben Q1 2015.

TSMC’s 20nm planar process is now set for volume production in January 2014, said Liu.

28nm will generate $5.4 billion in sales for TSMC in 3013, said Liu, representing 23% of TSMC’s total sales.

Liu reckons the IC market will grow 5 % in 2014, the foundry sector will grow 9 % and TSMC will grow in double digits.

In 2013, TSMC grew by 17-18%.
